How to Spend 5-days in Cartagena, Colombia | EP. 166
Joi shares her must eat/see/do in Cartagena, Colombia 🇨🇴 Get ready for a super fun trip of partying, culture and food.
Hey everyone, it's Joi here! I hope you're having a fantastic year so far. Today, I am thrilled to share with you the ultimate Cartagena, Colombia itinerary that will make your trip an unforgettable experience. Whether it's your first time visiting or you're returning for more fun, this itinerary is designed to give you a taste of the vibrant culture, exciting nightlife, and beautiful beaches that Cartagena has to offer.
Introduction
I recently had the pleasure of exploring Cartagena for my 25th birthday, and let me tell you, it was a lituation! From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the energy and the welcoming atmosphere. Everywhere I looked, black people were thriving and enjoying life, which immediately set the tone for an incredible experience. So let's dive into the details of this action-packed itinerary and get you ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
Day 1: Arrival and Getting Settled
Fly into Cartagena during the day to enjoy the stunning views from the plane. - Take an Uber to your conveniently located Airbnb in the Getsemani neighborhood. Drop off your luggage and head to a nearby cafe or restaurant for a quick bite to eat. Don't worry about planning your lunch spots in advance, as there are plenty of options to choose from. Explore the colorful streets of Getsemani, known for its street art and vibrant atmosphere. In the evening, make a reservation at a restaurant like Ana Restaurante (pics below) for a delicious meal to kick off your trip. Experience Cartagena's vibrant nightlife with the help of a local bouncer who can guide you to the hottest spots in town.
Where to stay
I recommend staying in the Getsemani neighborhood because of its walkability and closeness to everything. You can always uber to Boca Grande if you want to visit the beach, but even most boat tours to the islands still leave in walking distance from this area.
Day 2: Immerse Yourself in Cartagena's Culture
Join a cultural tour to San Basilio de Palenque, the first freed slave town in the Americas. Learn about the town's history, language, and the unique skills passed down through generations. Discover the traditional African medicines and healing practices during a visit to a holistic health expert. Witness a captivating dance demonstration by the local residents and even participate in the joyful festivities. Immerse yourself in the local language and traditions while interacting with the warm and welcoming people of San Basilio de Palenque. In the evening, indulge in a memorable dining experience at Cande, where you'll enjoy live music, dancing, and delectable Colombian cuisine.
Day 3: Brunch, Paint, and Unwind
Start your day with a brunch and paint session where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast and unleash your creativity with a painting tutorial. Take some time to relax and recharge, perhaps by lounging at the beach or exploring the picturesque streets of Cartagena. Enjoy a cozy dinner at Carmen, a restaurant known for its charming ambiance and delightful cuisine.
Day 4: All-Day Boat Party
Embark on an all-day boat party, infused with Afro beats and hip hop, hosted by Explore Tribu. Party and dance to the rhythm of the music while cruising along the stunning coastline of Cartagena. Visit Cholon, a lively island where you can revel in the vibrant atmosphere, savor delicious food, and even try your hand at water sports like jet skiing. Explore other nearby islands, take in the breathtaking scenery, and enjoy the crystal blue waters. Return to Cartagena and unwind in the evening, perhaps with a private dinner prepared by a talented chef at your Airbnb.

Day 5: Art, Exploration, and Departure
Explore the vibrant neighborhood of Cartagena, known for its colorful streets and local art scene. - Purchase unique artwork from talented local artists and support their craft. - Take a leisurely stroll along the charming streets and soak in the lively atmosphere. - Enjoy a delicious breakfast at a local hotspot like A Polka Cafe. Depart Cartagena with unforgettable memories and the desire to return for more adventures.
Final Thoughts
Cartagena is a destination that caters to everyone, offering a mix of history, culture, nightlife, and breathtaking beauty. In just five days, you can experience the best of what this vibrant city has to offer. From the moment you step foot in Cartagena, you'll be surrounded by the infectious energy and warm hospitality of the locals. So pack your bags, put on your dancing shoes, and get ready for an incredible journey in the heart of Colombia!
Note: While Cartagena is an amazing destination, it is essential to prioritize safety during your visit. Stick to well-populated areas, travel in groups, and be cautious when accepting drinks from strangers.
